This novella was a quick 90-minute read! Our heroine, Lauren Murphy, came with plenty of sass, but I struggled to connect with her despite her fiery personality. She had this "cold as ice" demeanor, particularly in her interactions with Griff Harris, the hero of our story. I understand Lauren had a lot on her mind—her primary focus was figuring out how to help her brother get out of jail—but I found her attitude toward life and others a bit frosty. While I get that her circumstances were tough, I wish she'd shown more warmth or openness, which would have made it easier to root for her.
Griff Harris, on the other hand, was relentless in his pursuit of Lauren. He seemed completely captivated by her, even when she kept throwing up emotional walls. Despite Lauren's rejections and insistence that now wasn't the right time for a relationship, Griff wasn't deterred. In fact, I admired his persistence and willingness to look beyond her difficult upbringing. He clearly saw something in her worth fighting for and was determined to give her the life she deserved, even if she wasn't always ready to accept it.
While the story had its moments, I'd rate it a solid three stars. One of the highlights for me was the epilogue, where we glimpse how everyone moves on. It was nice to see the loose ends tied up, and even Lauren's brother finds himself in a better place by the end. That gave the story a satisfying sense of closure.
Would I read this book again? Probably not, but it was still an enjoyable way to pass the time. It didn't quite stand out among Ella Goode's other books, which I typically enjoy more, but it was okay for a short, fast-paced read. If you're looking for something quick to fill the time, this might be for you.
Book Blurb:
Griff Harris took one look at the sexy burglar at his friends business and knew he had to have her. Winning her required more tactical manuevers and persuasion than he had been trained for. Setting up a security system or providing body guard services was a cake walk compared to wooing Lauren and handling her troubled brother. Griff doesn’t mind. His sole goal is to make her stay.
Lauren Murphy knows better than to climb into the beefy arms of the security specialist who caught her in a bad situation. She has too much on her plate from trying to keep a roof over her head to making sure her brother stays out of jail. There’s no time in her life for the sexy man with the blue eyes and body to die for. Her hormones and her heart are screaming for her to let go, but her head knows better. But no matter how hard she tries to get away, his attention is making her want to stay.
